The Minho is an international river which comes to an altitude of 750 m in Meira and  Autonomous Community of Galicia and has a lengh of about 340 kilometers before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean south of the Town Guard and north of Caminha. In the last 75 kilometers of the journey, between Melgaço and the river mouth (FOZ) of the Minho forms the border between Spain and Portugal.

There are 14 islands across the Minho River section that are shared between Portugal and Spain, four of which are considered to be international, not being “disputed” by any of the countries.
